Ring a Bell? Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan Probed for Floor Mats After Complaints About Sticky Accelerators...

Remember Toyota's recall-woes over specific floor mats that could slip forward and snag the gas pedal? Well, we could be heading for a second round of recalls on the same issue but for a different automaker.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened a formal investigation into the 2010MY Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan models to examine allegations about pedals becoming trapped in the depressed position by unsecured floor mats.

NHTSA said that it has verified three consumer complaints concerning the current 2010 Fusion stating that Ford's optional rubber "All Weather" mat, when laid on top of the secured, standard carpeted floor mat in the driver's side foot well, can slip forward and trap the accelerator pedal.

The safety agency added that it has not received any complaints involving crashes, injuries or fatalities in the FoMoCo vehicles.

All in all, the investigation covers a total of 249,301 2010MY Ford Fusions, Mercury Milans.

And for those of you that are unfortunate enough to get into a 'sticky' situation, here's the NHSTA's advice to consumers:

Actions Consumers Can Take If They Cannot Stop Their Vehicles
-- Brake firmly and steadily – do not pump the brake pedal.
-- Shift the transmission into Neutral (familiarize yourself with where Neutral is).
-- Steer to a safe location.
-- Shut the engine off.
-- Call your dealer or repair shop to pick up the vehicle. Do not drive it.

Report: Ford Planning to Kill Mercury Division, Maybe as Soon as Year's End

Mercury, the maker of higher grade Ford models with waterfall grilles such as the Milan and Grande Marquis, will have the same fate of GM's Pontiac and Saturn brands, according to a report from Bloomberg citing two unnamed people familiar with the plan.

The news agency said that Ford Motor Co executives could ask the automaker's board of directors as early as July to green-lit the (eventual) axing of the Mercury brand.

Ford did not give a straight out answer when asked about the report. "Our plans regarding Mercury have not changed," said Ford spokesman, Mark Truby. "Like any good business, we constantly assess our business portfolio. If things change, we will let you know." Bill and Elena Ford declined to comment, Truby said.

People familiar with matter said that Ford Executive Chairman Bill Ford and other members of the founding family, who have an all-important 40 percent voting control of the automaker, clearly support the elimination of Mercury.

The Mercury brand was created in 1939 by Edsel Ford as a Buick-like, entry-level luxury marque slotted between mainstream Fords and premium Lincolns.

The brand's sales peaked in 1978 at 579,498 units, but have since plunged to just 92,299 vehicles last year. In the first quarter of 2010, Mercury's sales accounted for a mere 1.9% of FoMoCo's global sales.

2011 Ford Fiesta: U.S.-Spec Hatch and Sedan Leaked Online, Mega Gallery with 125 Photos

Only two days before the 2011 Ford Fiesta's premiere at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show, and a comprehensive gallery depicting what is claimed to be the North American market version of car, has made its way onto the internet. We don't have any official information on the subcompact model that will be offered in the States as a five-door hatchback and a four-door sedan, but the photos show that Ford's US division made a few minor yet noticeable stylistic changes on the car's exterior design.

Compared to its European sibling, the 2011 Fiesta hatchback gets a slightly different upper grille along with a reshaped bumper housing a revised lower air grille and large chrome scoops at both corners. At the rear, the only visible changes concern the larger lower lights strips and the more pronounced bumper trim in the center.

In what concerns the Fiesta four-door sedan, it features a somewhat gaudy three-bar grille up front while at the back, Ford designer's tweaked the rear bumper and added a different set of tail lights that are reminiscent of the Taurus sedan.

Trim aside, the interior appears to have remained intact in both cars.

We'll have more on the Fiesta as soon as Ford comes out with an official release.
